Instructional Designer Salaries: 2020 Report

One of the questions I'm asked most often by aspiring instructional designers and people considering a career change to ID is this:  How much money do full-time IDs make? 

I've compiled a quick ID salary overview below. Keep in mind, these are full-time ID jobs, not freelance (which I'll cover in an upcoming post). Here are the latest 2020 numbers:

Salary.com - The average Instructional Designer salary in the United States is $76,190 as of September 25, 2020, but the range typically falls between $67,690 and $84,690

ZipRecruiter.com - As of Oct 17, 2020, the average annual pay for an Instructional Designer in the United States is $80,182 a year. While annual salaries are as high as $132,500, the majority of Instructional Designer salaries are between $62,000 to $93,500 in the U.S.

LinkedIn.com - The average salary for Senior Instructional Designers in the United States is $84,000. Related salaries include: Lead Instructional Designer $80,000Instructional Design Consultant $80,300, and E-learning DeveloperUnited States, $68,000.

Indeed.com - Jobs posted on Indeed as of October 2020 include salaries ranging from $78,003 to $101,251. Indeed.com lists the average salary for a instructional designer is $66,242 per year in the United States and $3,000 cash bonus per year.

    DevlinPeck.com - This October 2020 post lists average ID salaries in the U.S. between $75,000 and $80,000. His comparison of average worldwide ID salaries are as follows:

    • $83,144 USD in the USA 
    • $113,833 AUD in Australia 
    • £50,109 in the United Kingdom 
    • $79,949 CAD in Canada 
    • ₹877,403 INR in India 

    Keep in mind that salary ranges vary widely depending on education, certifications, additional skills, and experience. Experienced IDs can make $20-$30,000 more/year.

    When comparing industries, generally, the corporate sector pays the highest full-time ID salaries, followed by government, nonprofits, and higher ed.
